Description:
I was told this came from the old state mental hospital on St. Louis' Arsenal Street and have no reason to doubt it: the psychiatrist's couch came up at the same auction, but wouldn't fit in my car.
If you don't know about the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, or WAIS (and I didn't until I came across this), it was first published in 1955--making this a first edition of sorts--replacing the earlier Wechsler-Bellvue Test that had been the standard since 1939.
The manual is in good condition, although it was apparently used by someone not overly concerned with hand washing. All but one of the 110 pages is still securely attached to the ring binding, the exception being page 61-62 which is detached--but in no danger of being lost--halfway down, the rest of the pages have soiling to some degree, a few have penned notes, some extraneous pen and pencil marks, and one--page 63-64--what can only be a cigarette burn that didn't leave a hole; other than that, everything is readable if not riveting.
The booklet of "Picture Arrangement" (everything not self-explanatory is covered in the manual) contains 8 envelopes with 3 to 6 story cards, every set complete. The "Block Design" box could use taping at every corner, but all nine red and white blocks--made in Western Germany--are there. "Object Assembly F," the woman's face, and "Object Assembly M" (box wear here, too) the person, are complete as shown in the photo, as are "Object Assembly E"--again, a little tape wouldn't hurt the box--and "Object Assembly H"--more tape--which aren't shown assembled because I had no idea what they were until I consulted the manual. The blue leatherette-covered WAIS piece is the ring-bound 31-page "Picture Completion and Block Design Cards," all of which are still firmly attached, but I still don't know what's missing from the pictures on pages 17 and 20. Also included is a WAIS record form--copyright 1947 and 1955--so you can enter your friends' scores, but only if you're a mental health professional, anything else would be unethical, so please don't do it.
As a bonus, at the bottom of the box these things came in is a "Revised (1957) Beta Examination Manual" with the original owner's name in red ink on the top right corner, the heavy cardboard scoring key inside, and soiling throughout, cardboard 1955 WAIS "Word List" and "Object Assembly Layout Shield" both with lots of random pen marks, a 1959 "Wonderlic Personnel Test" which, if the lower right corner weren't dog-eared would be in very good condition, a 1962 "Revised Beta Examination" booklet in good to very-good condition, and, for the kids, 1966 "California Survey Series Junior High Survey of Reading Achievement," "Survey of Language Achievement," and "Survey of Arithmetic Achievement," plus the manual and scoring key.
