Description: 18th - 19th century Caucasian Arm Guard Bazu Band made of a sheet of iron and etched with five lobed central cartouches and surmounted with arabesque imitating Arabic inscription. These types of arm guards were made in Russia and Caucasus from the 17th to the 19th century, and were very popular still in the 19th century among Khevsurs Chechens and Georgians. They were made in the style of Persian and Turkish defences but the shape is slightly different from the Turkish and Persian prototype which is very shallow with a rounded top.
REFERENSES: Very similar Bazu Bands to this, except from the 17th century, are published in the Russian book "Russian Arms And Armour" Edited by Yuri Miller Leningrad,1982 figure 21 (b).
MEASUREMENTS: Length: 30,7 cm (12 1/8 in). Width at the widest point: 10 cm (3 7/8 in)
