Description: Antique casket box with relief sculpture all around and micromosaic imbedded in the top. Made in France late 19th - early 20th century.
Measures 8inches long. Just under 4 inches wide and a little over 3 1/4inches high.
Handmodelled ceramic with panels of relief sculpted figures and script-like patterns. Some narrow panels have an interlocking scroll and floral theme - somewhat Celtic in taste. The upper panels around the lid look like Persian script. The broad panels on the front and back have an intrigueing theme of humans and horses with chariots. The sides depict somewhat elongated people - again, very curiously arranged, narrow and close to each other.
The top is in total contrast to the earthy clay. Made of tiny micromosaic pieces in colors of turquoise blue, white, yellow, various greens and black. Very finely constructed micromosaic of great quality.
Underneath is an impressed mark and the number 613. The mark is almost a circle of scalloped shapes with the words Terre and D'Or fairly clear. The last word is not legible, nor is the mark inside the circle.
Condition is excellent.
