Description: This is a lovely female mixed media portrait on heavy paper by the English painter Barry Leighton Jones (1932- ). Under glass in frame measuring 30 by 36 by 2 inches. Excellent condition. Colors are bright and vibrant and the work is flat. The artist employed watercolor and raised brush strokes (likely in acryllic) are apparant in his use of the color white. Given the abundance of Jones' prints (and unauthorized reproductions) of his clown art on the market, this work is refreshing and unique. He has depicted an attractive woman in a handsome dark coat and matching hat, circa 1920s or 1930s. She is seated at a cafe table, gazing into the distance with a half-empty wine glass beside her.

Additional images gladly forwarded upon request.

Jones is probably best known for his portraits of the world's most famous clown tramp, Emmett Kelly (1898-1979). Kelly was an American circus performer who created the clown figure "Weary Willie" based on the hobos of the Depression. Jones was the official artist to Kelly's estate in the 1980s and early 1990s. He created over 50 paintings and hundreds of drawings and prints of Kelly. At the age of 75, Jones is still active and accepts commissions for anywhere from 5,000 BP and higher. Notable collectors of his works include King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, Margaret Thatcher, Lord Arden, and The Ringling Brothers Museum in Sarasota.
