Description: The Chelsea Clock Company, in Boston and Chelsea, Massachusetts, is universally considered to be the leading maker of nautical clocks in America - if not the world. In business for well over 100 years, Chelsea has a reputation for quality that has no equal.

This clock, which is featured in the Demeter book on Chelsea clocks (page 193) , was, according to Chelsea, a special order. Chelsea produced a number of house-strike mantle clocks in this Eli Terry- designed case in the 1940’s, but only a very few with the ship’s bell strike, and these were special orders. The serial number is 536xxx, and the dimensions are 25 inches by 13.5 inches.

This clock is in superb condition . The face has minimal paint loss near the winding holes, the reverse-painting below the face is excellent, and the case has no damage. The excellent condition of the mahogany case and the painted face indicates that it definitely was carefully tended throughout its life, and that the case was probably expertly refinished at some time in the last 60 years .

I have documentation that this very clock sold, at auction, in 2006 for $1400, plus buyer’s penalty and other fees. FWIW.

This is a super clock. It is keeping perfect time, and striking the proper ship’s bells, and looks like a million dollars on my mantle. Fortunately, the price is a good bit less than that. This would be a perfect Christmas gift for the sailor in your life, who could enjoy its mellow ship’s bells at home during the cold season. It could also be at home on a larger yacht, as the motion of the sea would not disturb the spring-wound, 8-day movement.

Ship’s bell clocks are fairly common these days, but just after World War II, they were a rich man’s pleasure -- particularly a special-order mantle clock such as this. The Chelsea Clock Company will, for a fee, provide you with a certificate of origin , and it would be interesting to see who ordered this clock. Probably one of the first families of yachting at that time.
