Description: Harold Cohn (1908-1982), was a successful painter, printmaker and teacher working both in Detroit and New Jersey. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country including, The Detroit Institute of Arts (1933-45), The Carnegie Institute (1941&43), The Los Angeles Museum of Art (1945), The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1934), and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (1942). During his extensive career, Cohn explored many different elements of contemporary art. These influences can be seen in many of his drawings and paintings; much of his experimentation is thought to be reminiscent of Matisse’s art work. With such a striking comparison, it is no wonder that Cohn has such an extensive auction record. “Coffee Pot & Bowl of Fruit” from 1952, is a wonderful example of Cohn’s versatility as an artist as it shows the influence of Cezanne’s geometrical approach to objects and shifting perspective, but was drawn in a truly contemporary fashion. The loose ink drawing illustrates a tall coffee pot atop a table next to a large bowl of fruit. The objects were drawn with thick outlines of ink in basic shapes and shaded with quick ink washes in various gradations of gray to suggest light and shadow. The perspective shifts as it appears that the viewer is looking down at the table top, but the bowl of fruit is shown at a frontal view as if it were eye-level. The piece has been double matted with a black bottom mat and golden-tan top mat that matches the color of the paper giving the illusion that is extended beyond the picture plane. This gorgeous ink drawing is handsomely mounted in a sleek black wood frame reinforcing the high contrast of the piece and bringing the total measurements to 23 ¾”x 19 ¾.” The unique matting and framing presentation of this piece was individually selected and created by Le Chateau’s renowned master framer, Jeanette Shoenrock, and bears her signature on the back. Cohn’s signature can be seen in the lower left corner along with the date. This is truly a wonderful original piece by a renowned artist and is poised to become the new shining star in your collection of modern art.
