Description: This is a very old oriental scene with 2 men carrying a lady of means . The base is 10"long by 2" wide. This is an extremely finely detailed carved piece and was produced by a master carver. It is an all wood scene. It is in excellent condition except both of the men have a foot broken and reglued. The polls are removable. It is hard to line everything up and made the men stand up straight (unless you glue them down) and I believe this is caused by the shrinkage of the wood. The chest does not belong to this scene but it was in the box with all the others and this is the only one that looks like it would be in scale, so I am adding it to it. The chest has two holes where pins would have been but there is no marks on the base where pins would have been. I bought this at a local sale where the lady said she had purchased this about 10 years ago at an estate auction. The auction was for a gentleman who was 92 years old and he worked all of his working life in the government as a diplomat and this was purchased in his world travels. This is the only information she had and there is not one single mark indicating who or where this was produced.. Along with this was five other scenes depicting life in the orient. Probably all made by the same craftsmen. I believe this is a very old piece because the brass pins that hold the feet in place on the base do not match up with the holes in the feet anymore. For this to have happened either this master carver used greenwood (which is extremely unlikely because he would have known that his masterpiece would only last a year or two) or the wood has shrunk over the years which would make 70 years old or older for it to have shrunk this much. A lot of the feet have been broken or cracked exactly where the holds are in the feet due to this shrinkage. I have removed one of the pins on a two pined figuring so it will fit on the base properly.
