Description: Available to add to your collection, is this rare c.1828 Schwenkfelder Pennsylvania German Show Towel. These were typical of the PA German culture, and were not commonly found in other areas, or other cultures. The Pennsylvania Germans brought with them the old-country customs of decorative art to include colorful drawings, borders, hearts, flowers, birds and esoteric symbols. This was a tradition of the PA German women to invest their time in preparing various decorative textiles for their home. The creation of show towels were most often the province of the young lady in anticipation of their marriage; in other cases the Show Towel was made shortly after the marriage. This homespun linen Show Towel includes the initials, E.R. (Surname - REINWALT) at the top, and within a tree motif include the initials J.L.(Surname - Lindemuth) Colorful pink and blue threads create the lovely motifs of hearts, carnations, birds, square panels of tulips, and many more typical of the religious sector, known as the Schwenkfelders in Montgomery County, PA German. This Show Towel was previously sewn onto a blue and white checker liner by the collector that owned this Schwenkfelder Collection, to display the Towel easily. While t are a few minor discoloration flea spots, but this certainly does not take away from this piece's unique artwork and value. Seller will consider Best Offers.
