Description:
"The Spratling of Peru" ... Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950's, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados today believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico.
This fabulous figural brooch is a rare and rarified find for Laffi collectors, since the designer did not frequently work in gold and silver. The handwrought piece, depicting a gracefully posed bird, boasts a superb Inca motif, executed with Laffi's signature modernist panache. Here, the bird's body is crafted of sterling silver and detailed with only a minimal amount of tooling, around the beak and belly. The bird's wing, which is applied to the silver, is made of 18K gold and sports more detailed tool work. The prominent eye, also applied to the silver, is a half-dome comprised of 18K gold. Hallmarks: PERU, LAFFI, 18K, 925. Dimensions: 1-1/2" wide x 1-5/8" tall. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, with only some minor wear to the silver around the figure's eye and a wavy pin stem.
