TITLE: Contemplation, MEDIUM: SERIGRAPH, Rice Paper, SIZE: 34 X 24, EDITION: AP, HAND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, GALLERY RETAIL: $10,500
This is a Signed, Limited Edition Serigraph, by the internationally famous artist, Ting Shao Kuang. The print is on beautiful Japon rice paper, and the image size is 34 x 24 inches.
Ting Shao Kuang is now recognized as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. As a result, he was the first Chinese artist to sell one of his paintings at auction for over a $1,000,000 USD. Currently, it is rare to see any of his paintings sell for less than a million dollars. His limited edition prints are also highly prized by collectors, and all of Ting's limited edition prints are sold out. So, all that remains are prints in the hands of collectors and art dealers.
Along with Jiang Teifeng and He Neng, Ting brought "Yunnan School" art to the West in the early 1980's, where the style has been embraced enthusiastically ever since. Ting's work is notable for its line-work, often similar to Erte. Yet, what is most notable in Ting's art (and the Yunnan School art in general) is the color, which is often bold, highly saturated and dazzling.
Contrary to its name, "Yunnan School" is not a school but a style that emerged in China's Yunnan Province. Yunnan is a province in Southern China, and it borders Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. There are 26 distinct minority groups, each with its own unique customs, stories, symbols, style of dress and art. Additionally, Yunnan, which means "South of the Cloud" is a province of striking natural beauty. Artists of Yunnan therefore found themselves in a melting pot of traditions and artistic styles from which to draw inspiration. In his time in Yunnan, Ting drew from all of these sources and combined his new ideas with ideas he observed in nearby cave paintings. The result was a new style of printmaking referred to as "Heavy Color," "Red Earth," or in the West, "Yunnan School."
So, there is no "Yunnan School," strictly speaking, and there is no founder. Instead, the word "School" refers to the wonderful explosion of new artistic ideas and art forms that emerged in Yunnan in the second half of the 20th Century. Ting Shao Kuang and Jiang Teifeng are recognized as the most influential and important artists of the Yunnan School style. Ting (and Jiang's) works are, consequently, collected by museums worldwide. ~Asian Art Today!~
