Description:
“The Spratling of Peru” … Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950’s, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados today believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico.
This fabulous brooch is handwrought in sterling silver and its striking, Inca-cubist design seems to depict a baby bird curled up inside its egg. The tooled bird figure, with its large, blue-green enameled eye, is applied to a hammered, oval “egg” disk, which, in turn, is backed by an industrial-style, openwork border. The pinback has a secure rollover clasp. The piece is marked PERU, G. LAFFI, 925 and measures approximately 1-5/8” wide x 1-1/4” tall x 1/4” deep. The brooch is in fine condition—eminently wearable and a valuable addition to any serious modernist silver collection.
